Saying goodbye to gas: Deborah’s all-electric home

I'm Deborah Sykes.

This is my home in St Kilda West.

It was built in 1890 so it's quite old and we've been here for 22 years.

We've taken it on to Electrify our house and we've completed that, and I'm really pleased to have done that.

It's not that long ago that we became grandparents, and I started looking at the concept of this little child and what their future is going to be.

So, I wanted to do what we could for our little bit, so we decided to go and become as energy neutral as possible.

So, we electrified the home, and we changed a lot of our habits.

And the bonus out of that is we've saved a heap of money as well.

We put a lot of solar panels on so we're using renewable energy electricity which is important for us.

The battery will store the energy that we make during the day and so then in the evening we have our own little supply to run the heating and the cooking from.

We don't have a gas bill anymore which is great because gas is going up all the time so not only am I saving money, but I know I'm actually helping the environment.

We make so much energy over summer we are in credit with our electricity company for about 9 months of the year.

That credit covers us for a lot of wintertime bills.

We have an EV, an electric vehicle, it's great fun to drive.

We use our solar energy to charge the car.

That means we don't actually spend money on driving the car because it's run by solar power and renewable energy.

The advice I'd have for anyone who's thinking about going all electric is that they just take it slowly, take a big deep breath and know they can do it.

And know that they're going to save a lot of money and be good for the environment.

Those two concepts will get them going.

It's easy and it's really worth it and I'm really happy I've done.
