Solar Victoria Net Zero Homes – Skills training

Advancing sustainable homes through free online low-emission building training.

Free online self-paced training to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to design and construct energy efficient homes in Victoria.

This free training is fully funded by Solar Victoria and delivered free of charge to people working in eligible construction industry trades and professions.

The Solar Victoria Net Zero Homes – Skills training online modules are aimed at equipping the residential construction industry with the knowledge and skills needed to design and/or construct 7-star and all-electric homes in Victoria.

  • Module 1: Covers key design principles of high performing, energy efficient homes.
  • Module 2: Focuses on improving building technique and standard practice, quality checking and incorporating compliance tools.
  • Module 3: Covers the healthy home and effectively managing all aspects of vapour management, condensation, and indoor air quality to ensure building longevity and resident health.
  • Module 4: Looks at integrating the most efficient technologies and major appliances to achieve Net Zero operational energy.
  • Module 5: Explores shifting homes to true Net Zero by selecting materials with lower embodied carbon, material re-use and understanding the “carbon budget” in construction.

This training also provides guidance on the National Construction Code 2022, including new whole-of-home appliance requirements.

It has been developed and is administered by the South Australian Department for Energy and Mining’s Learning Hub for Energy Efficient Construction.

Check if you are eligible

To complete these modules for free, you must be carrying out work in Victoria in an eligible trade or profession in the residential construction industry. This includes:

  • practitioners registered with the Victorian Building Authority, including building inspectors, building surveyors, residential builders, draftspersons, project managers and quantity surveyors
  • trades and professions related to the energy efficiency performance of homes, including site managers, construction managers, home energy assessors, architects, electricians, plumbers, front-of-house/ client-facing roles (e.g., salespersons, designers, etc)
  • owner-builders
  • students undertaking construction-related study (e.g. Cert IV in Building and Construction, Diploma of Building and Construction (Building), etc)
  • fourth-year apprentices in the construction industry
  • others who can demonstrate a link to the Victorian construction industry and who play a role in the design and/ or construction of energy efficient homes and/ or improve the capacity of the industry to design and/ or construct energy efficient homes.

You will be asked to complete a questionnaire to confirm your eligibility.

If eligible, you will receive an email asking you to accept an invitation to set up your username and password.

Once you have set up you user profile, you will be able to access the Solar Victoria Net Zero Homes – Skills training modules comprising an introduction module and five other modules

Each module is 2 hours in duration and contains a range of supporting resources and related materials for self-directed learning.

About our commitment

Solar Victoria is investing $1 million to deliver targeted training to support residential construction industry trades and professions to design and construct energy efficient 7-star rated and all-electric homes.

The Renewable Homes Construction Training program for the residential construction industry aims to help reduce carbon emissions and household energy costs while creating healthier and more comfortable living spaces for Victorians.
