Use appliances during the day
Run energy-intensive appliances like your dishwasher, washing machine and dryer during daylight hours. That way you are using your solar power as it is being produced, instead of exporting it to the grid and having to pay to use power later.
If you have a heat pump hot water system, set the timer so it heats your water while the sun is out as well.
It’s also a good idea to stagger your energy consumption during the day where possible. For example, run your washing machine in the morning and your dishwasher in the afternoon. This way you won’t overdraw on your solar system.
Check your panels
Safely check to make sure there are no overhanging branches or leaves covering your solar panels. This will help your panels get maximum exposure to sunlight during colder months.
We recommend having a licensed electrician carry out solar panel maintenance every two years to ensure your system is safe and performing at its best.
Invest in energy-efficient appliances
Choose energy-efficient options when it’s time to upgrade or replace appliances like your lighting, whitegoods, heating and cooling or hot water system. Reducing your home’s energy consumption means your solar panels will cover more of your needs even on days when generation is lower. And the less you need to draw from the grid, the more you’ll save on energy costs.
Sustainability Victoria has some great information on choosing and using energy-efficient appliances.
Draughtproof your home
Keep warm air in and cold air out so you don’t have to run heaters as much. Upgrading your home’s draughtproofing and insulation can make a big difference to your comfort and your energy use.
Shop around for the best rate for you
It pays to check for a better deal on energy prices regularly. Use the Victorian Energy Compare website to see different electricity offers based on your location and usage.
Add a battery
A solar battery allows you to store solar power to use when you need it. Excess power that you don’t use during the day could help run your lights, heating and other appliances at night. This reduces your grid usage and can be a great way to maximise your savings – especially when you make your home all-electric.
We offer interest-free solar battery loans of up to $8,800 for eligible Victorians.
